The word empanada comes from the Spanish verb empanar which means to wrap or cover with a dough.   Empanadas originate from regions of Spain, Portugal and Italy and were introduced to populations around the world by early Spanish Colonists. Empanadas remain a popular food in many countries including regions of South America, Central America, South East Asia, Europe and North America.     Empanadas come in a variety of shapes and sizes with regional variances in filling and dough recipes. Most commonly empanadas are either baked or friend and served as a hot dish. Beef, veggies and cheese are common ingredients across cultures.     In most of South America, empanadas are a staple in the food culture as compared to pizza or hamburgers in the United States.
